Why Atlanta
Why brands choose a 3PL warehouse in Atlanta
Atlanta is the Southeast’s biggest distribution market, where three major interstates meet and rail lines from the Port of Savannah arrive. These are the main reasons brands choose an Atlanta 3PL.
A huge local market
Metro Atlanta had about 6.5 million people in 2025, making it the sixth-largest metro area in the US, with the rest of the Southeast close by.
Three interstates and a perimeter
I-75, I-85 and I-20 all meet in Atlanta, and the 64-mile I-285 perimeter links the main warehouse areas around the city.
Rail from the Port of Savannah
The Port of Savannah handled about 5.67 million TEUs in fiscal 2026, and CSX and Norfolk Southern intermodal terminals at Fairburn and Austell bring containers into metro Atlanta by rail.
Air cargo at ATL
Hartsfield-Jackson handled about 640,000 metric tons of cargo in 2025, supporting air freight and late cut-offs.
Foreign-Trade Zone 26
FTZ No. 26 serves the Atlanta area, letting importers defer or reduce duties on goods stored here.
Where in Atlanta
Key logistics areas around Atlanta: pros and cons
Atlanta’s 3PL warehouses are spread along the interstates radiating out from the I-285 perimeter, and where yours sits makes a real difference to cost and delivery speed. These are the main areas we look at for clients.
If you bring containers in by rail, the I-20 West and South Atlanta areas are closest to the Austell and Fairburn intermodal terminals. I-85 North suits brands serving Gwinnett and the Carolinas, and I-75 South has the most new space at the lowest rents.
| Area | Best for | Pros | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1I-85 North Gwinnett, Norcross, Suwanee, Buford | eCommerce and the Carolinas | On I-85 towards Greenville and Charlotte, close to Atlanta’s fast-growing northeast suburbs, with vacancy of about 7.8%. | Rents around $7.81 per sq ft a year and busy traffic on I-85. |
| 2I-20 West and Fulton Industrial Fulton Industrial Boulevard, Austell, Douglasville | Rail imports and big-box distribution | Near the Norfolk Southern Austell intermodal terminal on I-20 and I-285, with vacancy of about 7.9%. | Some older buildings along Fulton Industrial, and rents around $7.74 per sq ft a year. |
| 3Airport and South Atlanta College Park, Union City, Fairburn | Air freight and rail imports | Next to Hartsfield-Jackson and the CSX Fairburn intermodal terminal, with rents around $7.26 per sq ft a year. | Vacancy of about 11.4%, so quality varies, and airport-area congestion. |
| 4I-75 South and Henry County McDonough, Locust Grove, Stockbridge | Cost-conscious storage and routes to Savannah | The lowest rents of the four (about $6.58 per sq ft a year) and lots of new space on I-75 towards Macon and Savannah. | The highest vacancy (about 15.2%) and a longer drive to the northern suburbs. |
Rents are warehouse and distribution net asking rents per square foot per year, and vacancy by submarket, for Q3 2026 from Cushman & Wakefield, which puts metro-wide vacancy at 8.6% and the average asking rent at $7.71. Rents are what landlords charge, not 3PL prices, but they feed into what 3PLs charge for storage.
Where your customers are
Carrier zones from Atlanta: why customer location matters
Where your customers are matters as much as where your warehouse is. Before recommending Atlanta, we look at your order history to see which zones your orders would ship to.
| Customer location | Typical ground zone from Atlanta |
|---|---|
| Atlanta and Birmingham | Zone 2 |
| Charlotte, Nashville, Savannah | Zone 3 |
| Orlando, Memphis, Jacksonville | Zone 4 |
| New York, Chicago, Dallas, Miami | Zone 5 |
| Boston | Zone 6 |
| Denver | Zone 7 |
| Phoenix and the West Coast | Zone 8 |
Why it matters
Parcel carriers charge by zone (distance from the warehouse) and billable weight, the greater of actual and dimensional weight. From Atlanta, the whole Southeast sits in the cheapest zones, and New York, Chicago and Dallas are only Zone 5, so Atlanta works well as a single warehouse for the eastern half of the US.
The West is still Zone 7 to 8, and the gap widens for heavy or bulky products. If many of your customers are out west, adding a warehouse in Los Angeles, or using a central location such as Kansas City, can bring most orders into lower zones.
Zones are approximate. Carriers set them by origin and destination ZIP code, and bands vary slightly by carrier.
Sample costs
What does a 3PL cost in Atlanta? Typical rates
Here’s what 3PLs typically charge across the US, from an industry survey of more than 600 warehouses, with notes on how Atlanta compares. Use it to sense-check quotes, not to predict your own.
| Charge | US average | Typical range | Atlanta and what drives it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Receiving | About $10.50 per pallet | $5–$15 per pallet; container unloads often $250–$600 | Floor-loaded containers arriving by rail or truck from Savannah take longer to unload, so cost more than pallets |
| Storage | About $20 per pallet per month | $10–$30 per pallet per month | Atlanta rents are well below the coastal markets; I-75 South is usually cheapest and I-75 North and I-85 North dearest |
| Pick and pack (first item) | About $3.25 per order | Roughly $2–$5 per order | High-volume brands can negotiate well below this |
| Each additional item | Varies by 3PL | $0.30–$1.00 | Depends on how many items your typical order has |
| Monthly minimum | About $520 per month | $0–$2,500 per month | Matters most for smaller or seasonal brands |
| Setup fee | About $425 (not all 3PLs charge one) | $250–$1,000+ | Often negotiable |
| Shipping | Charged separately | Varies widely | Weight, size and carrier zone; usually the biggest cost |
US averages for receiving, storage, pick and pack and setup are from the Warehousing and Fulfillment 2025 Costs and Pricing Survey, as summarised in Red Stag Fulfillment’s 3PL pricing guide. The monthly minimum and typical ranges are compiled from published 2026 pricing guides. The Atlanta notes are directional, based on local warehouse rents. We gather competing quotes so you can compare them line by line. See the hidden costs of using a 3PL or estimate yours with our 3PL cost calculator.
Before you choose
What to consider when using a 3PL in Atlanta
Storing stock in an Atlanta 3PL brings US import rules and Georgia sales tax into play, plus winter ice and summer storms that can disrupt the Southeast. These are the points we make sure clients have considered.
Sales tax and physical presence
Georgia’s state sales tax is 4%, and local taxes take the combined rate in the City of Atlanta to 8.9%. Holding stock in a Georgia warehouse generally creates a physical presence, so you’ll normally need to register even below the remote-seller threshold of $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions.

Duties and de minimis
The duty-free de minimis allowance for low-value imports has been suspended since August 2025, so shipping stock in bulk to an Atlanta 3PL, with an importer of record and a customs broker, is usually the most cost-effective way to supply US customers.

Port, rail and drayage charges
Most ocean imports reach Atlanta through the Port of Savannah, by truck or by rail to the Austell and Fairburn intermodal terminals, so your landed cost includes inland drayage or rail on top of ocean freight, plus detention if containers aren’t returned on time. Ask your forwarder for the full door-to-door cost.
Ice storms and tropical rain
Winter ice can shut down Atlanta: a January 2026 ice storm cancelled more than 1,100 flights at ATL in a day and cut power to over 100,000 Georgia customers. Tropical systems bring heavy rain too, so ask your 3PL about backup power and their contingency plans.

Product and import rules
Some products need extra checks at import, such as FDA rules for food, cosmetics and supplements, USDA rules for fresh produce, and CPSC certificates for children’s products. Make sure your 3PL and customs broker know exactly what you’re shipping.
Labor costs and peak season
Georgia’s state minimum wage is lower than the federal one, so most employers pay the federal $7.25 an hour, and warehouse labor is generally cheaper than in the Northeast. Agree peak-season capacity and cut-off times for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the holidays well ahead.

Atlanta 3PL warehouses: frequently asked questions
Atlanta
There is no cost to use warenous to find the best 3PL warehouse for your business in Atlanta.
Rates are very business- and volume-dependent. As a guide, US 3PLs average about $20 per pallet per month for storage, about $10.50 per pallet to receive stock and about $3.25 per order to pick and pack, plus shipping. Atlanta warehouse rents average about $7.71 per square foot a year, well below the coastal markets, so storage is often at or below the US average. Treat these as a guide, not a quote.
Yes. We’ve personally visited at least one warehouse belonging to over 90% of the 3PL businesses in our network, and we’ve met the management team at every one. Our recommendations are based on what we’ve seen on the warehouse floor, not just a sales pitch.
Atlanta is the main distribution hub for the Southeast, with the whole region in the lowest ground zones and New York, Chicago and Dallas only Zone 5. It suits brands that want one warehouse for the eastern half of the country.
If you import lots of containers and need the fastest turnaround, a port-side warehouse keeps drayage short. Atlanta has a far bigger 3PL market and local customer base, with rail links to Savannah. We can compare both, including our Charleston page.
The best 3PL for you depends on your products, order volumes and where your customers are, not on size alone. We check every partner for four things: a good management team, a strong warehouse management system, a track record of reliability and the right certifications for your products. Then we shortlist the Atlanta 3PL warehouses that fit and help you compare their quotes line by line.
Atlanta has Foreign-Trade Zone No. 26, where import duties can be deferred or reduced. If that matters to your business, tell us and we’ll factor it into your shortlist.
Usually, yes. Holding inventory in a Georgia warehouse generally creates a physical presence, so you’ll normally need to register and collect Georgia sales tax, which is 4% plus local tax, for 8.9% in the City of Atlanta. Speak to a tax adviser before moving stock.
The main ones are Georgia sales tax, which has both a $100,000 and a 200-transaction remote-seller test, the federal $7.25 minimum wage for most employers, and planning for winter ice and tropical storms.
We’ll run a bespoke search across Atlanta and the wider Southeast to find a 3PL that does, at no cost to you.
Atlanta warehouse capabilities
The costs that a warehouse will charge are dependent on each warehouse however a summary of the main costs can be found here.
YES. With same day despatch capabilities, all of the 3PLs we work with can meet the requirements of marketplaces.
Some marketplaces i.e. The Iconic, have very late cutoff times for same day despatch, most 3PLs can meet these requirements however it forms part of the brief for them to confirm.
No…all of the 3PLs we work with can integrate with the major ecommerce carts (i.e. Shopify, Woocommerce) as well as the major ERP and inventory systems such as Netsuite and CIN7.
If you use a bespoke checkout or ERP then it is usually possible to integrate via a third party tool or API.
This depends on what works for your business. The majority of 3PLs can accept EDI orders however they also all have a way of uploading .csv files containing orders.
Yes….the 3PLs we work with all provide a tracking number to both you and the customer.
For eCommerce orders, this is usually automatically sent back via the shopping cart i.e Shopify
