Why Denver

Why brands choose a 3PL warehouse in Denver

Denver is the main distribution hub for Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region, with more than 3 million people in the metro. These are the main reasons brands choose a Denver 3PL.

Denver skyline with the Rocky Mountains at sunset

The Rocky Mountain hub

The Denver metro had about 3.1 million people in 2025, and it’s the natural base for serving Colorado, Wyoming and the wider Mountain West, which are a long way from other big distribution markets.

Denver International Airport

DEN served a record 82.4 million passengers in 2025 and handled about 732 million pounds of cargo, with plenty of belly-hold capacity for air freight.

Rail links to the coasts

BNSF and Union Pacific both run intermodal terminals in north Denver, bringing containers in by rail from the West Coast ports.

Interstates and the E-470 beltway

I-25 runs north to Wyoming and south to New Mexico, I-70 east to Kansas City and west through the mountains, and I-76 northeast, while E-470 loops around the airport.

Plenty of space to choose from

Industrial vacancy was 8.6% in Q3 2026, with lots of new space along the I-76 corridor, so tenants have more choice and negotiating power than in tighter markets.

Where in Denver

Key logistics areas around Denver: pros and cons

Denver’s 3PL warehouses are concentrated north and east of downtown, around the I-70, I-76 and I-25 interchanges and out towards the airport, and where yours sits makes a real difference to cost and delivery speed. These are the main areas we look at for clients.

The Airport and I-76 corridor have the most modern big-box space at the lowest rents. North Central is closest to the rail yards and downtown, and South Central suits fast delivery to Denver’s southern suburbs, but space there is tight.

Fast delivery to the southern suburbsClose to Denver’s southern suburbs on I-25, with the lowest vacancy of the four (about 5.5%).Little available space and rents around $10.72 per sq ft a year.

Rents are average direct asking rents per square foot per year (NNN) and vacancy by submarket for Q2 2026 from CBRE, with metro-wide vacancy of 8.6% for Q3 2026 from CBRE. They’re what landlords charge, not 3PL prices, but they feed into what 3PLs charge for storage.

Where your customers are

Carrier zones from Denver: why customer location matters

Where your customers are matters as much as where your warehouse is. Before recommending Denver, we look at your order history to see which zones your orders would ship to.

Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Kansas CityZone 4
Phoenix and DallasZone 5
Chicago, Los Angeles, SeattleZone 6

Why it matters

Parcel carriers charge by zone (distance from the warehouse) and billable weight, the greater of actual and dimensional weight. From Denver, Colorado and the Front Range are in the cheapest zone, but the nearest big markets outside the state are Zone 4 or more, and the East Coast is Zone 7 to 8.

A Denver 3PL is ideal if many of your customers are in Colorado and the Mountain West. Brands shipping nationwide often use a central location such as Kansas City, or pair Denver with Los Angeles or New Jersey.

Zones are approximate. Carriers set them by origin and destination ZIP code, and bands vary slightly by carrier.

Sample costs

What does a 3PL cost in Denver? Typical rates

Here’s what 3PLs typically charge across the US, from an industry survey of more than 600 warehouses, with notes on how Denver compares. Use it to sense-check quotes, not to predict your own.

Rates are very business- and volume-dependent. Your products, order volume and profile, SKU count, packaging and service needs can move them significantly, and most 3PLs quote each business individually. Treat these figures as a guide, not a quote.

US averages for receiving, storage, pick and pack and setup are from the Warehousing and Fulfillment 2025 Costs and Pricing Survey, as summarised in Red Stag Fulfillment’s 3PL pricing guide. The monthly minimum and typical ranges are compiled from published 2026 pricing guides. The Denver notes are directional, based on local warehouse rents. We gather competing quotes so you can compare them line by line. See the hidden costs of using a 3PL or estimate yours with our 3PL cost calculator.

Before you choose

What to consider when using a 3PL in Denver

Storing stock in a Denver 3PL brings Colorado’s unusual sales tax system and some high local wage rates into play, plus mountain weather. These are the points we make sure clients have considered.

1

Colorado’s sales tax system

Colorado’s state rate is 2.9%, but many cities, including Denver, are home-rule jurisdictions that set and collect their own sales tax, so combined rates in Denver are above 9%. Holding stock in a Colorado warehouse generally creates a physical presence, so you’ll normally need to register even below the $100,000 remote-seller threshold. The state’s SUTS portal lets you file for many jurisdictions in one place.

2

Duties and de minimis

The duty-free de minimis allowance for low-value imports has been suspended since August 2025, so shipping stock in bulk to a Denver 3PL, with an importer of record and a customs broker, is usually the most cost-effective way to supply US customers.

3

Rail and drayage charges

Most imports reach Denver by rail from the West Coast ports, so your landed cost includes rail and inland drayage on top of ocean freight, plus detention if containers aren’t returned on time. Ask your forwarder for the full door-to-door cost.

4

Labor costs

Colorado’s minimum wage is $15.16 an hour in 2026, and the City and County of Denver’s is $19.29, one of the highest in the US, so check which applies to your 3PL’s warehouse. It can make a real difference to pick and pack rates.

5

Product and import rules

Some products need extra checks at import, such as FDA rules for food, cosmetics and supplements, and CPSC certificates for children’s products. Make sure your 3PL and customs broker know exactly what you’re shipping.

6

Mountain weather and peak season

From September to May, Colorado can require chains on I-70 through the mountains or close it altogether, and there were more than 200 closures between Glenwood Springs and Georgetown in winter 2024–25. Plan for delays on westbound freight, and agree peak-season capacity and cut-offs with your 3PL well ahead.

Denver 3PL warehouses: frequently asked questions

Denver

There is no cost to use warenous to find the best 3PL warehouse for your business in Denver.

Rates are very business- and volume-dependent. As a guide, US 3PLs average about $20 per pallet per month for storage, about $10.50 per pallet to receive stock and about $3.25 per order to pick and pack, plus shipping. Denver rents are below the coastal markets, but the city’s $19.29 minimum wage can push up labor-heavy charges inside city limits. Treat these as a guide, not a quote.

Yes. We’ve personally visited at least one warehouse belonging to over 90% of the 3PL businesses in our network, and we’ve met the management team at every one. Our recommendations are based on what we’ve seen on the warehouse floor, not just a sales pitch.

A Denver 3PL is the natural choice if many of your customers are in Colorado and the Mountain West, which are a long way from other big warehouse markets. For national distribution, Kansas City or a coastal pairing is often cheaper, and we can compare the options.

It can matter. The City and County of Denver has its own minimum wage ($19.29 in 2026) and its own sales tax, while nearby cities such as Aurora and Commerce City have different rates. We’ll factor location into your shortlist and quotes.

The best 3PL for you depends on your products, order volumes and where your customers are, not on size alone. We check every partner for four things: a good management team, a strong warehouse management system, a track record of reliability and the right certifications for your products. Then we shortlist the Denver 3PL warehouses that fit and help you compare their quotes line by line.

Denver has Foreign-Trade Zone No. 123, which serves the area around Denver International Airport, where import duties can be deferred or reduced. If that matters to your business, tell us and we’ll factor it into your shortlist.

Usually, yes. Holding inventory in a Colorado warehouse generally creates a physical presence, so you’ll normally need to register for state sales tax and, in home-rule cities such as Denver, the city’s own tax too. Speak to a tax adviser before moving stock.

The main ones are Colorado’s home-rule sales tax system, the $15.16 state minimum wage and Denver’s $19.29 city minimum wage, and winter chain laws and closures on I-70 through the mountains.

We’ll run a bespoke search across Denver and the wider Front Range to find a 3PL that does, at no cost to you.

Denver warehouse capabilities

The costs that a warehouse will charge are dependent on each warehouse however a summary of the main costs can be found here.

YES. With same day despatch capabilities, all of the 3PLs we work with can meet the requirements of marketplaces.

Some marketplaces i.e. The Iconic, have very late cutoff times for same day despatch, most 3PLs can meet these requirements however it forms part of the brief for them to confirm.

No…all of the 3PLs we work with can integrate with the major ecommerce carts (i.e. Shopify, Woocommerce) as well as the major ERP and inventory systems such as Netsuite and CIN7.

If you use a bespoke checkout or ERP then it is usually possible to integrate via a third party tool or API.

This depends on what works for your business. The majority of 3PLs can accept EDI orders however they also all have a way of uploading .csv files containing orders.

Yes….the 3PLs we work with all provide a tracking number to both you and the customer.

For eCommerce orders, this is usually automatically sent back via the shopping cart i.e Shopify

Using Warenous

All of our Denver 3PL partners are pre-screened to ensure they have 4 key things:

  • A good management team
  • A gold standard Warehouse Management System
  • A track record of reliability
  • They have the certifications/accreditations for your product

We work with a range of 3PL warehouses and so can find a solution for all businesses both big and small. However, we’ve found that it is often uneconomical to use a 3PL warehouse if you are doing less than 100 orders a month. This number can vary depending on whether you receive bulk orders or single ecommerce orders, so always feel free to reach out.

NO. There is no commercial benefit to recommend one warehouse over another. We represent you and our sole purpose is to find you the best 3PL warehouse for your business.

Once we have captured your requirements, we run a competitive pitch process with the suitable 3PL warehouses. Each of the 3PLs know that they are competing with others for your business. We also use our experience to check that the rates provided are market competitive.
